Meet the Governors
Who are the Governing Body?
The Governing Body is made up of representatives from parents, staff (teaching and non-teaching), the Local Authority and the local community. The Governing Body meets twice each school term. Regulations define the three key roles of the Governing Body as:
- Setting the strategic direction
- Securing accountability
- Monitoring, evaluating, supporting and challenging
This means that the Governing Body fulfils the role of a ‘critical friend’, with the overriding aim of improving the quality of education and standards of achievement at Wray Common Primary School. We are involved with development planning, policy making, monitoring and evaluating performance, setting realistic but challenging targets for pupil performance and ensuring accountability.
As part of our monitoring role governors each shadow a curriculum area and are attached to a class and make visits to the school. Governors regularly visit school to listen to readers, work in the library, assist with school trips and support staff in the classroom.
Each governor is a member of at least one of the following sub-committees:
The Every Child Matters Committee, which considers all matters relating to health and safety, security and safeguarding, standards and achievement, and the curriculum;
The Resources Committee, which provides guidance and assistance to the Head teacher and governing body in all matters relating to finance and resourcing of the school, its premises and grounds;
The Personnel and Staff Welfare Committee, which determines staffing levels and staff structure and considers all personnel and staffing issues.
Each of the committees meets at least three times a year and reports to the termly meetings of the whole governing body.
Perhaps you have considered becoming a parent governor but are unsure about what is involved. If you are interested in learning more about the role of the governors, informative leaflets can be obtained from the school office. The work of a governor can be demanding at times but it is very rewarding and will enable you to make a contribution to your local school and community.
Although there are no vacancies currently, if you would like to join us and contribute to the success of the school please contact the Chairman in the first instance via the school.
