Bike It
!!! New Event !!!: Monday 5th to Friday 23rd March 2012 - The Big Pedal
This year scooters will count in The Big Pedal 2012!
Once again we will be competing in The Big Pedal, a virtual staged bike race around the UK.
Every time you cycle or scoot to school your journey will count towards Wray Common’s journey around the UK. With the weather getting better what a great excuse to get your bike or scooter out and get excerising. For more information check out the link on the Leraning Zone.
Don’t forget to support your local bike shop. Remember that C & N Cycles offer a 15% discount on all safety equipment and 10% discount on bikes, to all Bike It schools!
Why not try out the National Cycle Network near you? For more information about National Cycle Network routes in your area and about Sustrans, the charity behind Bike It, visit www.sustrans.org.uk.
Please remember that cycling is a fun activity and a great way to increase activity levels and reduce the traffic congestion around school.
Please ensure that you have read and understood signed and returned the Wray Common School’s ‘Safe Cycling to School’ policy available by clicking here to download a copy or you can ask for a hard copy from the School Office
Mrs Michalowska, Bike It Representative
There are lots of reasons for encouraging cycling:
- It is one of the best forms of exercise for young people and, when asked, it is very often the way they say they most want to come to school.
- It is not only great fun but also teaches them independence and vital road safety skills which keep them safe for life as well as helping provide alternatives for parents who currently drive their children to school.
- It is good for the environment and helps cut down on traffic congestion.
Gayle Rowson, our Bike It officer, works for the sustainable transport charity, Sustrans, (the people behind the National Cycle Network and Safe Routes to School) in partnership with Reigate and Banstead Borough Council. Gayle’s aim is to see how we can set up the safest possible routes and put everything into place to help your child to start cycling to school. She will look at all the issues around secure cycle storage and ensure cycle training is taken up by as many children as possible.
If you would like to help with the Bike It programme, volunteers are always needed to help with activities such as: Cycle training; Assisting at events; Running after school clubs, etc. Contact details are given below.
