House Captains

When children join Wray Common they are allocated to a house, either Rubies, Sapphires, Diamonds or Emeralds. House Captains have a range of responsibilities which range from counting house points for the weekly Celebration Assembly to helping to pick teams and motivate their houses in whole school events such as Sports Day and the Annual Swimming Gala.

Wray Common is very proud of its House Captains. Each year, Captains and Vice-Captains are democratically voted for each of the school’s four houses: Emeralds, Rubies, Diamonds and Sapphires.

"House Captain is a job you have to run to catch up with because you can always do better. A great part of honesty is included in how many house points your house has earned. You also have to be kind if you don’t win and clap for others. I am passionate when I do it and I always wanted to be one and now I am one. Although there is a lot I can improve on being a House Captain." – Phoebe J

"My role is the vice captain and we collect the house points on Friday lunch time. Me and Phoebe swap turns going up in assembly each week. I enjoy my role because you get to go up in assembly and represent your house. This role is important because if we don’t collect the house points nobody will get the teddies." – Millie

Reading Mentors

Understanding how important it is that children read daily, some of our Year 6s have been selected to hear younger pupils read.

Practise makes perfect! Research shows that daily reading is critical to children’s development. Not only does it improve children’s language skills but it also encourages empathy, develops focus and teaches children about the world around them. In fact, studies show that reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background. With this in mind, Wray Common have developed a reading mentor scheme where children from Year 6 go in and read with younger children to help further develop their love of reading.

"I enjoy my job because I get to talk with younger children and I also help to sort out the library." – Jackson

"I enjoy the role of reading mentor because I LOVE reading with younger children. Sometimes however it is difficult to get them intrigued in different books. I overcome this by getting them hyped up about it before we get to the library." – Daisy

"My role is a reading mentor. I help children to read and try to help them to try and get the words right. I support and encourage children to read and I try to make them like reading. This is a very important job as reading will help them in their English lessons." – Iman
