The Role of Governors

Wray Common School is part of the Greensand Multi-Academy Trust and since September 2021 the Governing Body is known as a School Committee. It consists of a team of volunteers, who act as a ‘critical friend’ for the senior management of the school. It is the role of governors to hold the school to account in its efforts to continue to improve and strategically develop the school. The overriding aim is improving the quality of education and standards of achievement at Wray Common Primary School. The School Committee is made up of representatives from parents, staff (teaching or non-teaching) and the local community. The committee has two strategic core functions.

Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.

Holding the Headteacher to account for educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff.

There are 11 Governors on the Committee and the Constitution is currently made up as follows, but it is flexible.

  • 2 Parent Governors (elected from the school parental population)
  • 1 Staff Governors (Head teacher)
  • 8 Co-opted Governors (will usually be from the local community and can include parents)

In practical terms this means the Governors, must ensure they are fully involved, understand the vision of the school and ask questions and comment at meetings so that their role in leadership can be evidenced within governing body minutes. Governors attend training courses and use the skills learnt in practical ways to benefit the school and they monitor the School’s Development Plan
